Moving On

Many of you know that giving up old toys, whether she uses them or not, is a very hard thing for Princess.  This Barbie Jeep has been up on a high shelf in the garage, waiting for Princess to be ready to move on. The Lizard King has had a buyer arranged for almost a year. We didn't want to rush her. She needs to do things in her own time. Last week, she announced that she was ready to sell it . . . but she needed pictures to remember it.

The Jeep is a tad small for Princess. That's right, her knees should not be touching the dashboard. ;-)

Stay tuned to see what Princess bought with the money she made.

  1. How exciting. Good for you guys to ease her through the transition. I don't believe it's helpful to force that on a kid...after all, it is their stuff.

Can't wait to find out what she got. :D

  3. It is exciting, isn't it Sheri? While LK and I don't understand why she has this need to hold onto things (although we have a few theories), it is her stuff. She has a right to hold on to it for as long as she needs to. I love that when she is ready to give something up, she can do it with joy.

It is pretty cool, Secret Mom. Giving things up is hard. I'm glad we can be patient enough to make the transition easier.

  4. We did the same with our kids old toys too. It's hard, they are part of them in a way. You're such good parents. I can't wait to see what she gets!

  5. Why am I not surprised, Sheila? You really should have been an unschooling mom. I'll post the purchase on Friday.

  6. I absolutely love that you allow her the time and space to get rid of stuff. I do that too. Only most of the time the toys are broken by the time they are ready to get rid of them. :)

  7. It's so important to respect our children and to allow them to do things in their own time, isn't it Crystal? Princess' toys usually hold up well. This is only the second time she has sold/given up something. It was easier this time than the first.

  8. We recently moved from the city to an unfinished house in the country, and moved scads of stuff, just to ease the transition. We pretty much only down-sized adult stuff and the few things my kids wanted to part with on their own accord. I think being respectful of kids' possessions now helps them learn how to manage Stuff in a healthy way as they continue to grow and have their needs and wants change.
    Cheers,
    Nikole

  9. Beautifully said, verdemama! I wholeheartedly agree. If children are forced to give things up before they are ready, I would think they would be more likely to hold onto things as an adult. I don't believe in forcing things on children, expecting them to learn. Learnin happens. And it's a beautiful thing.
