Let's Calculate

At the Dollar Store a couple years ago, Princess chose these packs of cards. They have princesses on them, so really, how could you go wrong? I didn't notice until today, they aren't labeled "flash cards" but "learning cards". Interesting. Anyway, the cards mainly sat in Princess' playroom untouched.

A couple of months ago she told me that she wanted a calculator. I found one in our junk variety closet and handed it to her along with the packs of cards. I showed her how to use the cards to enter calculations into the calculator. Princess thought that was super cool!

I tend to look at things a little differently. It's the unschooler in me, I suppose. Princess isn't required to memorize math facts. I think that it's more important to know how to solve a problem than to know the solution. Yeah, I'm crazy like that.

  1. Very cool - on both mum & daughter's part. She really is a walking textbook (if there is any such animal) for unschooling isn't she?

Am adding you to the Project 2011 list - go us!! :-)

  3. Love it! And I'm totally with you that it's more important to know how to find an answer than it is to memorize one.

    I'm looking forward to Project 2011 too...yay! :D
