We have been living in our house for a little over a year. After renting for so long and not being able to paint, we really want to add some color to our home. We're beginning with the kitchen/dining area and the guest room. One of the challenges is finding a color that we all like. Yes, we have agreed that we all have an equal vote and it has to be unanimous.
We decided on green for the kitchen, so we bought some samples to try out. We started with the lightest color (bottom left), but I wasn't so sure about it. We tried the darkest color (middle right), but I thought it was too yellow and too dark, LK didn't like it and Princess hated it. We tried the top color and the little patch below, but thought it was too blue, LK didn't like it and Princess hated it. We then all agreed on the lightest color. Days went by and after thinking about it, I really don't like any of the colors.
Honestly, we all wanted red. We're only painting around the cabinets and one wall in the eating nook with this color. So now we're thinking about that for a while. Of course, the samples will begin again. The rest will be neutral. And no, we haven't chosen that color yet either.
Why the hesitation? Well, the last house we owned, we went all out with color in the house. And while at the time we loved it, it was really bold. I'm not sure that I want that again. I thought I was over my fear of color, but I think it's still here. *sigh*
I can't wait to see what happens next!
What colors do you have in your house? I'd love to hear your color choices!! Please share!!
My kitchen is a little bit lighter than the green at the bottom of your lightswitch plate, the cabinets (made by my husband with frosted glass) are painted a cream color, and the accent color is a soft pink. Even the Gardener likes the pink and it matches my Desert Rose dishes so well.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds lovely, Aliceson! See, I'd like to go with a lighter green, but LK doesn't like light colors. Do you have any pictures of your kitchen on your blog? I'd love to take a look! :)
ReplyDeleteI like green. My kitchen is BEHR Spring Green (a little lighter and a touch more yellow than what's around your light switch). It goes well with the neutral floor and whiteish cabinets.
ReplyDeleteSee, Sheri! Green is a perfectly lovely color. Why am I stressing so much? Now I'm thinking we should try the green, but LK and Princess are excited about trying the red. Why do I have such color issues?!?!
ReplyDeleteI just posted about the color I painted my living room. I love it. It is called Rivers Edge, its a shade of blue and is light but bright. I bought it at home depot in the behr section. :) The dining room was painted by the landlord and I call it yellow bus. I have no idea what color it actually is but it is that bright yellow that a school bus is. LOL The kitchen has an accent wall of the rivers edge and the rest is neutral. My bedroom is going to be the next room painted and it will be Gulf Winds, its sort of a stormy blue color. The little ones room is a soft green and the older two do not have color on their walls yet.
ReplyDeleteI lived in so many rentals that did not allow you to paint and it is so depressing to live in a home with off white base coat white! I love color.
I love the blue you used. A lot! LK doesn't like blue, especially light blue. I wanted light blue for the guest room, but we finally settled on yellow. Like I said, we've agreed that we all have to like the color.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome that you get to paint in a rental. We were never allowed. I think that it's been so long since we've done color (10 years) that my fear has come back. Darn it... ;)
What about the green on the top right accented by a shade of red (dark)? Our kitchen is in Southwest colors (earthy). Greens are difficult but I love them. THey all look different when the light hits them.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to get a good green. We had a green kitchen and Davey's room as well. I hated each green after painting. Our kitchen is now a dark blue with earthy tile floors and light cabinets.
ReplyDeleteI used to have some pretty strong coloured feature walls that looked wonderful in my last house - including a green that was in the kitchen and family area and a deep burgundy in the lounge. This house is too small for that however, so we are back to a light neutral stone colour which gives the illusion of space.
ReplyDeleteSheila, that's an interesting idea, but I don't know that I want multiple colors. I really do love green and yes, they sure do look different when the light hits them! I guess that's why you probably hated them afterward, Secret Mom. Still . . . I really like green. We talked about it and I think we're going to switch back to the lightest green. I love the look of it against the dark wood cabinets.
ReplyDeleteCate, I love feature (or accent) walls. I think that while going with the lightest green, we won't paint the whole kitchen area. We're talking about painting just around the cabinets and one wall. Now we need to pick our neutral!
